Last January, following the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service and at the prompting of our local Ministerial Association, volunteers from many of the churches in our community assembled to determine how we could work together to demonstrate the love of Christ to the people of our community.
We called our initiative "Community Unity" and had nearly 150 volunteers who helped with the planning and organization of "Community Unity Day". Last year, on the morning of May the 10th, teams comprised of workers from different denominations were sent out to help people in need with their spring yard clean-up. With feedback from our local congregations and suggestions from both Links2Care and Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills, we identified 30 homes where the residents needed help. Some of these people shared the story of their struggles and special needs and we prayed with those who accepted our offer to bring their concerns to the Lord.
Our yard clean-up was followed by an afternoon celebration at Cedarvale Park which was open to the entire community. Those who came had an opportunity to enjoy pizza, BBQ hotdogs and other goodies. Children's faces glowed with joy as they experienced face-painting, crafts, balloons, games and a bouncing castle. Seniors enjoyed being served an "afternoon tea" in a special room. There was also music provided by 3 different groups from town. All this was offered completely free of charge.
We repeated the yard clean-up again last fall with plenty of positive feedback. We're excited about holding our Community Unity Day again this spring on Saturday May 2nd!
